There are two different programs for true first offenders:
- The Impaired Driver Intervention Program (IDIP); and
- The Weekend Impaired Driver Intervention Program (WIDIP)
When an individual has been convicted of a Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) first offense and has had no other DWI convictions in NH or any other state in the last seven to ten years (the law changed 1/1/2002 from seven to ten years and will be phased in gradually), he or she is considered a first offender and would belong in either IDIP or WIDIP. Both programs are 22 hours long and consist of the following:
- A one-hour intake interview;
- 20 hours of alcohol and other drug education classes;
- One hour final assessment by a licensed certified alcohol and drug counselor; and
- Possible continuing care recommendations that must be followed before their driver's license can be restored.
The Impaired Driver Intervention programs generally consist of seven class sessions scheduled on weekday evenings or Saturdays, plus two individual sessions. The fee is currently $460 and is subject to change without notice.
The Weekend Impaired Driver Intervention Program is an accelerated version of the regular seven class version. The accelerated version runs from Friday afternoon until late Sunday afternoon and includes 2 overnight stays. The fee is currently $585, which includes the cost of room and board, and is subject to increase without notice.
