SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) is a new virus that first appeared in China in November 2002. At this point, scientists believe SARS is caused by a virus from the same family of viruses as the common cold. The time from exposure to onset of the illness is up to 10 days. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are currently investigating the outbreak and officials now report hundreds of people infected in several countries, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, Canada and Germany. A small percentage of cases have resulted in death from SARS worldwide.
At present, there have been no findings of the exact cause of the disease and no specific treatment for SARS has been identified.
The SARS Fact Sheet provides general information about the virus, symptoms and precautions to take and what to do if you think you are exposed to SARS.
