Eligibility Requirements for the Division for Children, Youth

and Families

Eligibility for programs and services administered by DCYF is based on many factors.  In some cases eligibility includes income and NH residency requirements while in other cases the need for protection is the only requirement to receive services or participate in a program.  Each service or program has different eligibility criteria.  Eligibility information for DCYF programs and services is outlined below or separately on their own eligibility pages.

Adolescent Program

Federal statutes require NH to provide services to all youth over the age of 16 who are in out-of-home placement due to abuse or neglect and who are expected to remain in foster care until their 18th birthdays or longer. NH provides independent living services to all youth in placement, including those who are in care due to CHINS or Delinquency.  Federal statutes also permit the provision of age-appropriate services to youth younger than 16 years old.  NH Independent Living services begin at age 14 for youth under the guardianship of DCYF.

Youth ages 18 through 20 years who leave foster care on or after their 18th birthdays, and have not reached their 21st birthday are eligible for aftercare services including information and referral, educational and employment support, and room and board or other housing support.  Former foster care recipients (who left placement on or after their 18th birthdays) may also be served.
