To become a foster parent you must complete an application that requests information about you and your family. If you have children, they will each have an opportunity to complete age appropriate application forms. Each family member must also submit a completed medical information form. A criminal records check and a check of the NH Central Registry of Child Abusers will be conducted for each member of your household who is age 17 and older. Additionally, local or state fire and health inspectors will conduct inspections of your home. All information needs and documents are discussed in detail during information and training sessions. Any forms or other required documents to be completed are provided to prospective foster parents at that time.
Training is an integral part of becoming a foster parent in NH. You must complete a 21-hour course entitled Foundations for Fostering. This course assists you to decide if becoming a foster parent is right for you and your family. This training will also provide an opportunity for you to meet other people in your community who are training to become foster parents.
Your local Foster Care Worker will meet with you in your home to complete a family assessment and home study. It is a decision-making time in which all family members participate. This process helps to make good matches for children and assists you to identify the children you wish to serve.
