All Reported Births:

Total number of live births.  State totals may include more births than the sum of counties or towns because some births have an unknown residence.

Low Birth Weight:

Number of births where the recorded birth weight is less than 2,500 grams (about 5.5 pounds).

Very Low Birth Weight:

Number of births where the recorded birth weight is less than 1,500 grams (about 3.3 pounds).

Mother Initiated Early Prenatal Care:

Number of births where the mother initiated prenatal care in the first trimester of pregnancy (one to three months).

Mother Initiated Late or No Prenatal Care:

Number of births where the mother initiated prenatal care in the last trimester of pregnancy or obtained no prenatal care.

Mother Unmarried:

Number of births where the mother was unmarried.

Medicaid Payment for Delivery:

Number of births where Medicaid paid for delivery.

Mother Used Tobacco:

Number of births where the mother reported using tobacco at any point during pregnancy.

Mother's Education Less than 12 Years:

Number of births where the mother did not complete high school or receive a GED (General Equivalency Diploma).
