What is In and Out Medical Assistance?

Published Date:02/01/2004
Owner:Division of Family Assistance

In and Out Medical Assistance (Medicaid) helps individuals whose income is not enough to pay their medical bills but is too much to qualify for Medicaid.  Individuals are given a Spenddown, similar to a car insurance deductable.  When qualifying medical expenses add up to the spenddown amount, Medicaid can then help pay for bills incurred for the duration of the Spenddown period.  Please see the What is In and Out Medical Assistance? pamphlet (2 pages) for more information including:

  • Who is eligible for the program;
  • What resources and income are counted;
  • What a "Spenddown" is;
  • What a Spenddown period is;
  • What expenses count towards the Spenddown; and
  • How to apply for the program.
