Assistive technology devices are important tools to enhance independent functioning in an individual's personal and professional life. Assistive technology equipment includes a variety of assistive technology solutions such as wheelchairs, crutches, canes, walkers, reach extenders, grab bars, shower chairs, portable ramps, and communication support devices. For many individuals and families the costs of assistive technology equipment is prohibitive. Many states now have organizations that coordinate the sale or rental of gently used and reconditioned durable medical equipment at fantastic savings.
In NH, the Alliance for Assistive Technology, Education and Community Health (ATECH) Services provides education, information, and assistive technology services for persons affected by physical, sensory, cognitive and/or communication impairments. The sale and rental of refurbished equipment is part of a program known as the "Refurbished Equipment Marketplace" (REM). Individuals can sell, trade or donate equipment.
The New England Assistive Technology (NEAT) Marketplace located in Connecticut, the Massachusetts Assitive Technology Project (MATP) in Massachusetts, and the Vermont AT Project were also established to provide information and access to previously owned equipment and devices.
Many assistive technology devices can be accessed through various government and private agencies. Some are paid through insurance or through federal and state funding. Other devices and adaptations require partial or full payment by the consumer. REM and NEAT are authorized to accept payment from most government and private and non-profit agencies and insurance companies.
