FREQUENT QUESTIONS ABOUT

THE NH MEDICAID PREFERRED DRUG LIST

1. What is a Preferred Drug List (PDL)?
A PDL is a list of preferred drugs and non-preferred drugs. The preferred drugs have been reviewed and are Medicaid's recommended first choice drugs. Doctors and pharmacists have reviewed preferred drugs. Preferred drugs are as safe and effective as non-preferred drugs but can cost the Medicaid program less.

2. Can my drug still require a prior authorization (PA) even if it is on the PDL?
Yes, some drugs will still need PA. PA makes sure that the right drug is being used and that Medicaid will pay for that drug.

3. What if the drug I take is a non-preferred drug?
Always talk with your doctor about your medications and how you should take them to stay healthy. If you are filling a prescription for a non-preferred drug, your doctor may need to get PA before you will be able to fill that prescription. Your doctor may also change your drug to a preferred drug.

4. What happens if my drug does not get a prior authorization?
Your pharmacist is allowed to provide a 72-hour emergency supply of the drug. This will give your doctor time to get a PA.

5. Will I still have to pay a co-payment?
Yes. Co-payments will remain in effect. Co-payment amounts are: $2.00 for brand name drugs and $1.00 for generic drugs.

6. Who can I contact if I have questions or for more information?
You may call First Health Client Services at 1-866-664-4506 or Medicaid Client Services at 1-800-852-3345, ext. 4344 if you have additional questions about the PDL program.  If you would like to report a concern or problem about the PDL program, you may contact the DHHS Ombudsman at 603-271-6941.
