Questions & Answers:
1.  What is a radiation machine and what kinds of machines are there?Back to top

A radiation machine is a device that produces ionizing radiation without the use of radioactive material.  X-ray machines are a typical radiation machine.  Particle accelerators are also included.  Ionizing radiation is energetic enough to knock electrons out of atoms and molecules.

There are too many different kinds to list and more being introduced all the time.  There are machines for:

  • diagnosis and visualization in the healing arts and veterinary medicine;
  • therapy (e.g., accelerators and orthovoltage units);
  • industrial radiography (for visualizing imperfections in welds, castings, etc.);
  • analytical purposes (x-ray fluorescence and x-ray diffraction); and
  • various processes (e.g., sterilization).

2.  Who conducts radiation machine inspections?Back to top

Our health physicists carry out inspections to determine whether registrants are in compliance with the Rules.  Our inspections are typically not announced in advance.  Inspections can include:

  • posting of required items for worker information;
  • the machines themselves (whether they meet requirements);
  • the facilities that house them (e.g., shielding or operator's booth);
  • operations with the machines;
  • doses and levels of radiation;
  • procedures;
  • instruction and training of workers;
  • worker actions and competence;
  • records; and
  • other things as appropriate.

3.  Does Radiological Health regulate electromagnetic radiation or tanning booths?Back to top

Radiological Health has statutory authority to regulate electromagnetic radiation, the ultra violet radiation associated with tanning booths and other forms of non-ionizing radiation.  However, at this time it is not actively pursued.
