Radiation Machines

The Radiation Machines Program of Radiological Health promotes radiation safety and health for workers and the public in the use of radiation machines (e.g., x-ray machines and accelerators) in the healing arts, industry and academia.  The program regulates radiation machines in accordance with NH Administrative Rules through the registration of radiation machines and by conducting inspections to ensure compliance with all requirements.  The program also offers information and advice to registrants, workers and members of the public.

Anyone having a radiation machine is required to register it with the Radiation Machines Program. Registrants are responsible for abiding by the provisions of NH Administrative Rules.  Registrations are renewed annually.

Compliance inspections are not announced in advance and may combine observations by the inspector, the results of various tests and measurements, the responses of people interviewed, and a review of any required records.

Applications to own and operate radiation machines in NH and to bring a radiation machine into NH from out-of-state on a temporary basis must be approved by Radiological Health and all appropriate fees paid.

Each radiation machine registrant needs to:

  • develop, document and implement a radiation protection program;
  • keep doses as low as reasonably achievable;
  • ensure that radiation doses to workers and the public remain within the permitted limits;
  • instruct any workers in issues related to radiation safety;
  • post certain documents;
  • maintain certain records;
  • cooperate with inspectors; and
  • generally comply with all applicable Rules (some Rules pertain only to specific machines, operations, facilities, etc.)
