SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME (SSI) BENEFITS (FAM)

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) under Title XVI of the Social Security Act. SSI payments are made to individuals (including children under age 18) who are disabled, and have limited income and resources. SSI payments include retroactive installment payments to representative payees for individuals whose disability is based on drug addiction and/or alcoholism.

There are two basic categories under which a financially needy individual can receive SSI benefits on the basis of disability:

•       an adult age 18 or over who is disabled; or

•       a child (under age 18) who is disabled.

Treatment: Unearned Income

Exceptions:

•       SSI payments made to a FANF dependent child are excluded income; and

•       Verified retroactive lump sum SSI payments are excluded income.
