133.09 Certification Periods SR 96-58, 02/97 (FSM-A)

The following chart summarizes food stamp certification periods:

1 Month

Up to 4 Months

(Initial Certification)

Up to 6 Months

Up to 12 Months

Imminent changes are expected.

One or more individuals are subject to lockout or are on strike.

Receiving unemployment compensation benefits.

Receiving fluctuating earned income.

Expenses exceed household income.

A potential wage earner.

A clear potential for fluctuating circumstances.

Exception: Set a certification period of no more than 3 months for households containing one or more ABAWD members.

Little likelihood of changes in income and household circumstances.

Provided information which resulted in incorrect benefits.

TANF households.

Granted separate household status because an individual with parental control of a minor child lives with a parent or sibling.

Self-employed households with one or more individuals with unstable circumstances.

Initial four-month certification period indicates a longer certification period is warranted.

Very stable income and all individuals are unemployable.

Very stable income and all individuals are elderly.

Very stable circumstances and the only source of income is from self-employment.
