161 REDETERMINATION/RECERTIFICATION SR 98-51Dated 12/98 (FSM-A)

Food Stamp eligibility is determined for a specific period of time called the certification period. At the end of the certification period, entitlement to Food Stamps ends. The individual must apply and be recertified in order to continue to receive Food Stamp benefits.

Redetermine eligibility for all individuals at regularly scheduled interval periods of no longer than 12 months.

Review individuals more frequently when either of the following occurs:

• there is a change in case circumstances that affects other eligibility factors; or

• there is conflicting information regarding eligibility.

Review and prove all eligibility factors and criteria that are subject to change. Update eligibility and benefits, as necessary. Assign the next redetermination by counting the correct number of months after the month of the previous redetermination.

Exception: If the case involves multiple programs of assistance, redetermination/recertification periods for all programs are aligned to coincide with the most frequent redetermination/recertification required by policy. See Family Assistance Manual PART 161, REDETERMINATION/RECERTIFICATION, and Adult Assistance Manual PART 155, REDETERMINATION, for additional information on redeterminations/recertifications involving multiple programs of assistance.
