NH Maternal Mortality Review Committee

Information and resources regarding the NH Maternal Mortality Review Committee

The New Hampshire Maternal Mortality Review Committee (NH MMRC) was legislatively established in 2010 to begin reviewing pregnancy-associated deaths in response to rising national and state trends. To support this work, NH DHHS received an ERASE MM grant (Enhancing Review and Surveillance to Eliminate Maternal Mortality) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2019 and in 2020 officially became an AIM (Alliance for Innovation in Maternal Health) state.

 

What the NH MMRC Does

The combined purpose, mission, and vision of the NH MMRC is to review NH maternal mortality cases closely to understand all medical and social factors leading to these tragic events with the aim of eliminating all preventable maternal deaths in New Hampshire.

The goals of the NH MMRC are to: 

  • Perform a multidisciplinary review of maternal mortality cases.
  • Identify trends and risk factors.
  • Provide recommendations to guide preventive measures and strategies.
  • Disseminate the findings and recommendations to individuals and organizations.

 

How It Works

Before the Maternal Mortality Review Committee meets, a case narrative is written for the committee members to review. It is constructed from a variety of records, including information about hospitalizations, vital statistics, medical records, and autopsy reports. All personally identifiable information, such as names of patients, providers, facilities, or communities are removed before the information is provided to NH MMRC members. No individual health care providers are identified and no data that could identify the individual is released to the public.

All MMRC Decisions/Recommendations are entered into the Maternal Mortality Review Information Application (MMRIA) which is a data system designed to facilitate MMRC functions through a common data language. CDC, in partnership with users from the committees from across the country and other subject matter experts, developed the system. It is available to all MMRCs.
